how to: modern festive decor

Sarah here. After suffering the wrath of the colourful holiday decorators and being called ‘The Grinch’ about 1000 times, I thought I’d clear the air. YES, there are other ways to make holiday decor look beautiful. There isn’t one right way or one wrong way to do it, I’m just here to help! Let’s recap a few interior decor styles we see around this time time of year and WHY they’re cool. And listen, if you want to keep your rainbow lights up all year, who am I to stop you?

WHITE XMAS

HATE ME IF YOU WANT, but I think this has to be the easiest way to make your holiday decor look chic with the least amount of effort. Purchasing minimal, neutral pieces will ensure that this decor will last forever, regardless of the style you go with. Let the simple greenery, cozy textiles and curated selection of ornaments do the talking. Greens and metals can also be worked in here. If you’re stressed about your kids, give them their own mini trees and let them go wild.

ONE WITH NATURE

Keeping it stark and natural, this minimal Scandinavian style will have your house looking magazine ready at all times. This one is for the minimalists out there, I know you’re somewhere! Lots of wood, real greenery, and nature-inspired textures everywhere.

COTTON CANDY VIBES

If pink and pastels make your heart sing, then this is for you. This is a playful take on festive colour and metallics and focuses on everything ‘frilly.’ White trees, feathers, pom poms, glitter, the works.

MOODY & MODERN

Believe it or not, even the moodiest colours have a place on your tree. Deep jewel tones and black are so cool right now, if you’re in a new space, try it out!

MIXED METALS

You can still have fun without traditional red and green, see?! You can mix almost any and every shade of metallics in here, or just focus on silver and gold if you’re overwhelmed. Glass works too!

KITSCHY-KOOL

Again with the jewel tones, this style lets you have fun and live your best maximalist life. Think Anthropologie meets the holiday season.

TRADITIONAL: THE OG

If you’re going to go traditional, go for it. To make it feel curated, think vintage and don’t feel like you have to include your ‘ho, ho, ho’ sign. Rich golds, worn velvet, warm lights, it’s a look.
