8 interior design mistakes you’re probably making

Finally finished your space and feel like something is just, off? Maybe you’ve fallen victim to one of these common interior design mistakes. Read on for all the tips and tricks that interior designers swear by.

1. YOUR RUG IS TOO SMALL

(At least) the front legs of your furniture pieces should be on the rug that you’ve selected. If you’re not sure what size to get, grab the bigger option.

2. YOUR FURNITURE ISN’T GROUNDED

Make sure that all your furniture pieces aren’t sitting on tiny legs. You need one piece that sits on the floor to make your space feel grounded. If it looks like your furniture would blow away with a gust of wind you might need to swap something out.

3. YOU HAVE A MATCHING FURNITURE SET

This is a no go! Upgrade your space immediately by getting rid of the matching set. TRUST US. Even if you’re in need of two sofas, get two different ones! Cousins, not sisters, lol.

4. YOU’RE LACKING STYLING

Make sure that you style your space intentionally, for living. Although we want to avoid too much clutter, having a space that’s just pieces of furniture in a room feels bare and stark. If you look at all the images that you love in your Pinterest boards, they likely have styling that’s completing the space.

5. YOU HAVE TOO MUCH STUFF

Okay here’s where we want to avoid clutter. Having too many small knick-knacks is not what we want. Having intentional, large scale pieces will make your space feel like it should be in a magazine.

6. YOU’VE CHOSEN THE WRONG ART

Your art needs to be large, and hung at eye-level. Having pieces of art that are too small, or hung too high on the wall feels dinky and cheap. Notice how the larger scale makes the space instantly feel more expensive, even if it’s a plain white canvas with some paint thrown on it.

7. YOUR FURNITURE IS TOO SMALL

In interior design, scale is everything! You’ll notice a huge shift from having many, small pieces vs. less, large pieces. Think of the fanciest furniture brand you know, and why it’s so “fancy.” It’s all in the scale of their pieces in relation to the space.

8. YOUR DRAPERY IS HUNG INCORRECTLY

Your drapery needs to be hung high and wide, as in at least 1’ above and outside of the window size. Your windows will feel dramatically larger and more significant, even if your drapes are from Ikea.
